Family Outing Stays Top For 11 Consecutive Weeks

Thanks to the appearance of Cha Tae Hyun as a guest family member, SBS Family Outing continued its hot streak on the weekend television ratings chart for the 11 consecutive week as the leader against competing programs.

Not only did SBS Family Outing trumphed competing variety programs over the weekend, it also knocked the weekend dramas off the No.1 spot, becoming the highest rated program for the weekend. According to TNS Media, the rating last night was 26.1% which was an increase of 1 percentage point compared to the previous week. KBS Happy Sunday (1N2D and IMC) got 16.0% while MBC We Got Married continued to struggle with 14.2% despite numerous changes.

The inclusion of Cha Tae Hyun as a guest family member has attracted the attention of many with with goofball antics. In yesterday’s episode, Cha Tae Hyun and Kim Jong Kook were in charge of making breakfast. The both of them showed excellent chemisty (best of friends off-screen) with their comedic performance creating lots of laughter. They also re-enacted scenes from Cha Tae Hyun’s movie My Sassy Girl as part of the sleeping ranking game.

There’s also good news for SBS commercial-wise other than high ratings. Every sunday, when Family Outing airs on tv, 4 billion won of advertising dollars would roll into their coffers. Even after taking away the production cost, artistes’ appearance fees, etc, SBS still earns in excess of 2 billion won.

According to a SBS staff, “The Korean economy might be suffering but it has led to a demand for advertisers to place their money on programs that still do exceptionally well especially in the ratings department. Despite the fact that you have to pay more because everyone wants a share of the pie, advertisers don’t seem to mind that one bit. And with Family Outing ratings being in the upper echeleons of 20%, it has become the top choice for advertisers.”

No More MCs and Studio Recording For We Got Married

We Got Married is now going through a revamp with Season 2 being planned for 2009 and the next big change will involve scrapping the entire studio recording and together with it, the current 4 MCs on the show, Lee Hyuk Jae, Park Myung Soo, Kang Soo Jung and Jung Hyung Don will also leave.

Starting from next week (7th December), We Got Married will not have any MCs hosting the show in a studio (means no more studio audience also) anymore. The show will focus entirely on the couples themselves (means 2 or more additional minutes, what’s the difference?). According to MBC, they hope that this change will be refreshing for viewers and also save a little on production costs. This means that the MCs appeared on the show for the last time on 30th November. Other known changes include the departure of JoongBo couple in mid-December with a new couple replacing them after they depart.

The loss of the MCs plus the studio recording where you could see the couples reaction to their segments is lamentable but it was indeed made surplus to requirements in recent weeks compared to the beginning. Jung Hyung Don will still be on We Got Married as a family member for the Ant couple segment.
